Employers Losing Skilled Workers as Baby Boomers Retire
Employers are catching on. With the beginning of the retirement for Baby Boomers in 2008, it has finally occurred to employers that some of their best employees are going to be leaving. We aren’t go to be replaced easily and now someone besides us knows it!
Employers are pulling together to solve the problems that are approaching with a potential mass exodus of workers. “One of those groups is the Alliance for an Experienced Workforce, initiated by AARP. With more than 20 industry associations representing more than 5 million businesses, the focus is on finding strategies for recruiting and retaining workers over 50, says Emily Allen, director of work force programs for AARP in Washington, D.C.” (Salt Lake City Tribune)
It’s nice to be appreciated, albeit a little late. The workforce and retirement issues will be changing dramatically over the next decade and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds, and how companies cope as they are faced with the issue.

I’m not a Baby Boomer, but a late Gen X-er that found herself losing job opportunities to the 20-somethings. So, I can relate. There’s a lot to be said for experience. It will be interesting to see if this recruitment effort works out.
