Golden Agers

Does Libido Vanish With Age?

If each of us had a nickel for every comic strip or scene on a television show about a tired middle-aged wife turning her husband down (for sex, of course) at night because of a headache or whatever reason, we would each be millionaires.  For some reason, it is assumed that people, once they reach a certain age, lose their sex drive and just no longer have any interest in it.  As the teenyboppers would say, “Aren’t you too old for that?”

Of course Baby Boomers and senior citizens aren’t too old for that.  In fact they are just figuring out what is right for them and are finally comfortable with a long-term partner.  So if the sex drive has faded away, and it isn’t age, what is causing it?

There are a variety of physical reasons that can put a damper on the flame.  And there are also a variety of psychological issues that can contribute to the problem; things like stress, overwork, raising kids and caring for older parents all take their toll.  This article talks about some options you can use to slow your life down and rev your libido up.  And of course, as always, if there are medical issues or prescriptions you take regularly, take to your physician.  He or she will have heard the story before and will likely have some suggestions for you to reclaim one of the best parts of your life.

Bipartisan Social Security

Is there such a thing as a plan for Social Security that could gain approval by both Democrats and Republicans?  I claim no expertise in things politcal, but I have to admit that were both parties happy with a solution, I would be worried.  I can’t imagine a solution to the looming problem of Social Security that could make anybody happy, let alone both major parties in the United States political system. But there is a plan in the works.

The plan was created by Jeffrey Liebman, who served as a special assistant for economic policy to President Bill Clinton; Maya MacGuineas, who served as Social Security adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during the 2000 presidential campaign; and Andrew Samwick, a former chief economist on President Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers.

The major changes within this plan are:

  • Increasing the payroll tax rate.
  • Raising the taxable wage cap.
  • Raising the retirement age.
  • Creating mandatory investment accounts.
  • Cutting benefits.

Is it possible that the only reason they all will be happy with the plan, is that no one really likes it at all?

The Official Baby Boomer Qualifying Exam

Are you a Baby Boomer?  Well, technically if you were born between 1946 and 1964, you are.  But are you REALLY one?  Do you remember Clint Eastwood saying, “Make my day,” when it was the first time around and not a rerun?  That is a good start!  How about McHale’s Navy?  And those funky roundish television screens that in the beginning only showed black and white to eager viewers.

There is a way to determine if you are really a Baby Boomer through an online quiz.  I took it and did quite well!  I am officially a Baby Boomer.  I was most pleased that I remembered most of the bits of trivia that have really become quite more than just trivia.  These are part of our culture now!

Take the test.  I’d love to hear how you did.  Come back and leave a comment if you have a chance – it is a great walk down memory lane.
